Košice architecture student is awarded prize by the Royal Institute of British Architects

Zuzana Sojkova, a student at the University of Kent’s School of Architecture has received a prize for excellence from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Zuzana, 21, was the winner of the Degree Prize at Kent. She received her Prize from Derek Nicholson, Chair of RIBA West Kent Branch at the University’s recent graduation ceremony. The Prize, which celebrates the talent of architecture students at the University, is awarded by the two Kent-based RIBA Branches that represents nearly 600 architects across the county. Zuzana received a certificate and a cheque for £200.

The Prize was awarded at Kent School of Architecture’s End of Year Show, for students’ work. The judges were impressed with Zuzana’s project, which comprised designs for the University’s School of Music and Fine Art in Rochester.

Zuzana planned the buildings, which range from a concert hall to student accommodation, around her analysis of the sieges of nearby Rochester Castle, which dates from Norman times, with forms that represent different warfare strategies.

Zuzana chose materials such as weathering steel, glass and concrete to reflect the area’s industrial heritage. Her idea was to reintroduce water into one of the castle ditches, refocusing interest on the historic buildings. ‘Shipbuilding and the nearby dockyards provide a precedent for rainwater collection, water level control mechanisms and wastewater treatment.’ The music practice rooms are positioned on moveable platforms.

Zuzana is from Košice in Slovakia, which was the European Capital of Culture last year and has six UNESCO World Heritage sites nearby. Zuzana attended the Gymnázium M.R.Štefánika in the city. She has just completed her three-year Part 1 course towards qualifying as an architect, which in the United Kingdom takes at least seven years.

While studying architecture, my
way of thinking and perceiving the
surroundings has been significantly
altered. I developed love for designing
spaces that I intend to nurture forever
as an architect, production or theatre
designer. Creating architecture
within a film setting resembles, in
my opinion, conducting an orchestra.
It requires working with two other
dimensions – sound and time –
and when all the ingredients are
successfully intertwined, they create
a complex whole, a symphony in its
own right.
